When we think of eco-friendly products, mattresses aren’t the first to come to mind. However, many contain chemicals, toxins, and harmful VOCs. That’s where Avocado Green Mattress comes in. I had the delight of speaking to Avocado’s own Jessica Hann about the business and its commitment to health and sustainability.
1. Tell me a little bit about Avocado Green Mattress. How did it start?
So essentially the idea was born when our founders went in search of a green mattress (made with natural, safe, organic materials) that they could actually afford — and came up short! They were blown away by what was being marketed as “green” or “natural” — much like as in the food industry, where these terms are often unregulated and are used liberally — and frustrated by a lack of transparency.
So, they did what any good entrepreneurs would do and set out to create one. Avocado Green Mattress officially launched in 2015, and the public response and support has been truly amazing. People were ready for it!
2. What kind of mattresses do you sell? How are they made?
We make non-toxic and eco-friendly — yet luxurious — mattresses and pillows.
Our mattresses come in two models (a gentle-firm Standard and a plush Pillow Top) and are made from 100% natural Dunlop latex rubber (tapped from sustainably harvested trees in Asia), natural wool, certified organic cotton, and up to 1,414 recycled steel pocketed support coils. And what they lack is almost as important as what they’re made of: there are no polyurethane or memory foams, no toxic fire retardants, and no chemicals to off-gas. They are made fresh, on-demand in sunny California.
Our pillows are also made from 100% natural latex with added natural Kapok fill. They are encased with a certified organic cotton cover. They are also great because you can customize their feel by removing or adding filling.
Both our pillows and mattresses are certified GREENGUARD Gold, which means they meet some of the most rigorous tests out there.
3. How does Avocado Green Mattress contribute to a sustainable future?
Sustainability is core to our mission and values as a company. We focus on eco-friendly
materials that are renewable and recyclable and always consider the impact to the planet when sourcing or manufacturing. We’ve also partnered with CarbonFund to help reduce our carbon footprint. It’s also important to us to make products that are not emitting chemicals or pollutants into the environment. We are also a Green America certified business and recently joined 1% for the Planet, which means we are committed to giving back 1% of our total revenues to nonprofits seeking to help protect the environment.
4. What advantages does “being green” have for your business?
Being a truly green company allows us to be transparent and really live out our mission. This
transparency helps us to connect in an authentic way with our customers and partner with some awesome, like-minded brands and people. It’s absolutely not always the easiest route, but we believe it is worth it. We know our actions have an impact on the future of our planet, and we don’t take that responsibility lightly. The great news is that this seems to resonate with our customers too.
5. What makes your mattress better for consumers than a traditional mattress?
It’s simple — our mattress is better for your health and for the health of the planet. We spend about one-third of our lives sleeping on our mattresses, so it is a place that once you “detox” can have a huge impact on your overall health, wellbeing, and environmental footprint.
I always encourage people to do their own research, and look for natural and organic ingredients that won’t emit chemicals into the air you breathe at night, proper support where you need it, and a company that values and respects the environment. Look for certifications and ask questions. Avocado Green meets and exceeds all of these criteria, and does so in a way to make it as affordable and convenient as possible.
6. At Eco Local Markets we are building a sustainable future by providing farmers & craft makers a way to sell their goods locally through an online marketplace. Do you think this type of business is beneficial to local businesses and communities?
It’s hugely beneficial! As the desire for transparent, eco-friendly, non-toxic, natural, and organic products grows — consumers need an easy way to connect with like-minded businesses, and it’s awesome that Eco Local Markets are doing just that.
